Hi!

I noticed that you are a computer programmer...........How much schooling is required for this? Knowing what you know about this profession......would you recommend it to others? Why or why not?

No schooling is required to be a computer programmer.  I have worked with quite a few computer programmers who are self-taught.  You can learn how to do it through books, searching for examples online, and talking with other programmers.

The schooling is for if you want to work in industry.  Many employers want you to have a degree.  I suppose the reason for that is because having a degree listed on your resume tells an employer a few things about you before they even talk to you in person.  It tells them that you can finish what you begin...that you are not a "quitter."  It tells them that you have a certain level of understanding and education and training.  Often they will hire someone with a degree over someone who does not have one.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science.  Usually this is sufficient.  Often employers will want you to get your MBA if you want to go into management, but not always.  I would get your Bachelor's degree and then work in the industry for a while.

Knowing what I know about this profession, I would recommend this profession to others.  It tends to pay well ( I have made over $60,000 / year for the past 3 years).  It is a challenging line of work!  It requires determination, logic, and problem-solving ability.  You need to have strong communication skills and work well with others.

What I enjoy about it is the CREATIVE aspects of it.  When I create a web page, I really am creating something.  I determine where the controls go and what they do when the end-user interacts with them!  It can be very rewarding.  It can also be very frustrating.  Fortunately I work with a great team that is willing to help me.  The internet contains vast information on how to solve different programming problems.  There are also hundreds of books you can buy on various subjects.

I hope this has helped to give you an idea of this profession.

Tom

Eric M.,

It's been a longtime since I talked with you. How are you doing? Do you still plan on going on a mission?

School started a week ago and I'm a senior this year! Take care, Jenni

Ah, congrats on the seniorhood! You hav e a good year in store for you.

And I am preparing for a mission. I just have to meet with my Stake President and then wait 10 days or so for my call. Pretty exciting stuff!

I'm very happy for you Eric! I know that devoting to years of your life to serving the Lord won't always be an easy task and infact I'm sure that at times it will be quite difficult, but it is the right thing to do and it will also help to build character! Good luck and best wishes! Jenni

Hi LDSgirl,
I was wondering if you could take a moment and watch this video of Elder Holland talking about God's Words Never Cease. Be sure to add a rating and comment. Thank you so much!
