"Where None Before Hath Stood"

 Dear Everyone,

     I wrote this poem such a long time ago I almost forgot I had it, but steve354's blog about 9/11 and taking time to show our patriotism brought it back to mind.  The refrain to this was actually an advertisement posted back in the 1600's during the colonization of this land.  Investors used it as a means of persuading people to uproot themselves from their homelands and re-settle in the "New World".  This one's for you, steve354.

 

"Where None Before Hath Stood"

 

Long ago our fathers came from far across the sea

With strong desire in their hearts, a yearning to be free

To work the land and worship God as free men ought and should

To build a new foundation in support of all that's good

With daughtless faith and courage bright they faced the wilderness

Commencing the establishment of hope and righteousness

 

And to the adventurers thus (they wrote) -

"Be not dismayed at all.

For scandall cannot do us wrong,

God will not let us fall.

Let all men know our willingness

For that our work is good.

We hope to plant a nation

Where none before hath stood!

 

Our Founding Fathers made a pledge for freedom to contend -

Is life so dear or peace so sweet that we should not defend

Our rights and our religion, our freedom and our peace

That through our love of liberty all nations may be blessed?

Bill SB 572 - Important to California Residents

I'm just passing along this e-mail that came to me from friends of mine who live in California. They desire to spread the word to anyone who lives in the State of California to call the governor and encourage him to once again veto this legislation. Thanks for taking time to read it. Gov. Schwarzenegger is being pressured more from all sides to sign this bill.

If signed, SB 572 would pressure every California public school to have an official Harvey Milk Day promoting the homosexual, bisexual, and transsexual agenda to children as young as kindergarten. The sky is the limit on what a school considers suitable commemorative exercises. This is written so broadly, SB 572 could allow gay-pride parades on campus, cross-dressing, and homosexual marriage dramas, etc. It all going to come down to how much pressure California 's governor feels. Remember, last year the Democrat-controlled Legislature passed Harvey Milk Gay Day, but Schwarzenegger vetoed it.

This year, Schwarzenegger is being lobbied more heavily by homosexual activists. Sean Penn, who played Harvey Milk on the big screen, and Milk's homosexual activist nephew, have both personally lobbied Schwarzenegger to ask him to sign SB 572. Otherdifferences from last year is that there are four more Democrats in the Assembly voting for Harvey Milk Gay Day. And for the first time, a Republican, Senator Abel Maldonado, is supporting this anti-traditional family value bill.

"Don't Quit. Keep Playing."

Dear Everyone,

     I don't know where this story came from, but I think it's wonderful and well worth sharing....

 

     Wishing to encourage her young son's progress on the piano, a mother took her boy to a Paderewski concert.  After they were seated, the mother spotted an old friend in the audience and walked down the aisle to greet her.

     Seizing the opportunity to explore the wonders of the concert hall, the little boy rose and eventually explored his way through a door marked "NO ADMITTANCE".

     When the house lights dimmed and the concert was about to begin, the mother returned to her seat and discovered that the child was missing.

     Suddenly, the curtains parted and spotlights focused on the impressive Steinway on stage.  In horror, the mother saw her little boy sitting at the keyboard, innocently picking out "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star".

     At that moment, the great piano master made his entrance, quickly moved to the piano and whispered in the boy's ear, "Don't quit.  Keep playing."

     Then, leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left hand and began filling in a bass part.  Soon his right arm reached around to the other side of the child, and he added a running obbligato.  Together, the old master and the young novice transformed what could have been a frightening situation into a wonderfully creative experience.

     The audience was so mesmerized that they couldn't recall what else the great master played - only the classic "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star".

     Perhaps that's the way it is with God.  What we can accomplish on our own is hardly noteworthy,  We try our best, but the results aren't always graceful, flowing music.  However, with the hand of the Master, our life's work can truly be beautiful.

     The next time you set out to accomplish great feats, listen carefully.  You may hear the voice of the Master whispering in your ear, "Don't quit.  Keep playing."  May you feel His arms around you and know that His hands are there, helping you turn your feeble attempts into true masterpieces.

A Yummy Something To Do With All Those Tomatoes!

Dear Everyone,

     Being Summer, we all know it's that time of year when the garden is producing well - sometimes a little too well.    Here's a tasty recipe you can use when you find yourself with an excess of tomatoes!

 

Creamy Vegetable Soup

     2 cups water

     4-5 medium-large fresh tomatoes

     1 large carrot, chopped

     1 large stalk celery, chopped

     1 large onion, chopped

     2 cloves fresh garlic, minced

     1 tsp. salt

     1/2 tsp. white pepper

     1/4 tsp. nutmeg

     1/2 stick butter (or margarine)

     1 cup half-n-half

     2 tbsp. flour

 

Remove stems and stem cores from tomatoes, then quarter tomatoes.  In a three-quart covered saucepan, simmer tomatoes gently in 2 cups water for about 5 minutes.  Remove tomato skins.  Add chopped carrot, celery, onion, garlic, spices and butter.  Simmer gently 'til vegetables are quite tender.  Remove from heat.  Add half-n-half.  Ladle soup into blender.  Blend on low.  While blending, add flour.  Blend on high speed 'til soup is smooth in texture.  Return to saucepan.  Can be cooled and stored until needed, or served immediately.  Makes about 2 quarts.

A Special Day Of Fasting And Prayer

As so many people are concerned about our current political situation, I have felt impressed to ask if anyone would care to join me in a special day of fasting and prayer.

Nearly all our “representatives” have forgotten that we, the people, exist while they continue to pass seemingly limitless legislation all directed at curtailing our freedom. They have instituted an endless string of services, administrations, authorities, etc., which have financially overburdened and distracted our government from its true functions and purposes. They have taxed and taxed, spent and spent - left us with not only unimaginable debt, but are now using that debt to make of us indentured servants to the rest of the world. They block the mining and/or extraction of our natural resources. Individual branches of government exceed their authority and take powers unto themselves that they do not constitutionally have. The constitution has been entirely bypassed and cast aside with the introduction of “czars”, allowing the Executive Branch of government to trample upon the rights of the people. The groundwork has been carefully laid to slip our Constitutional government out from underneath our feet and compel us to serve a “One World” master.

Before things get any worse, I am asking anyone who may be interested to join me in a special day of fasting and prayer. I do this to the end of inviting the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and enlisting the assistance of the Almighty in helping us preserve our freedoms.

Our founders had a dream. They saw a great and unique purpose in the forming of this, the United States of America. They expressed that dream and purpose in the preamble to our Constitution. There were six specific goals our founders wished to see America and her people achieve.

1) To FORM A MORE PERFECT UNION – Other forms of government frequently expose citizens to suffering at the hands of tyrants and despots. Our founders wished to see the people included in their own governance through representation and accountability. Three branches of government were included in our constitution having specific powers unto themselves, providing for checks and balances within the government. The greatest check and balance would be the people themselves.

2) To ESTABLISH JUSTICE – Justice for all; not “artificial justice” aimed at hiring corrupt defense lawyers dedicated to getting clients off the hook (even if they're guilty), bribing a judge, or making sizable contributions to someone’s campaign or “cause”.

3) To ENSURE DOMESTIC TRANQUILITY – Let me repeat that - Domestic Tranquility. Our founders sought to ensure that we would have peace here at home amongst ourselves. Our nation currently groans under the weight of clever manipulations – cries for “rights” for one special interest group or another with no regard for the general welfare of the nation at large. “Differences” are exploited and complained of while no mention is made of the fundamental, yet wonderful gifts that unite us.

4) To PROVIDE FOR THE COMMON DEFENSE – While certain of our nations leaders have seen the wisdom in protecting our borders, our people and our way of life, others have sought to erase these things. America is now portrayed as having no culture of her own, no history prior to the Civil War, and having no need for citizens to keep and bear arms IN DEFENSE OF THEIR CULTURE, THEIR HISTORY, OR THEIR OWN PUBLIC OR PRIVATE SAFETY. Our justice system continues to be turned upside down - criminals’ rights are promoted while honest citizens are left with nowhere to turn. The second amendment reminds us “A well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” But it's being infringed!!

5) To PROMOTE THE GENERAL WELFARE – As mentioned previously, our nation currently groans under the weight of clever manipulations – cries for “rights” for one special interest group or another rend the air. How tragic these dissatisfied souls fail to realize just what our founders provided them with – a limited government with limited government power, allowing the people to do anything they deemed necessary to secure their own happiness. As I frequently remind people, LIBERTY IS NOT LICENSE – we are not free to do whatever we want, but we are free to do what we OUGHT. Our founders were hoping we would have the good sense and humility to know the difference.

6) To SECURE THE BLESSINGS OF LIBERTY TO OURSELVES AND OUR POSTERITY – Again, allow me to repeat that – the Blessings of Liberty. More than securing liberty, which is a wonderful blessing in and of itself, our founders sought also to secure the blessings of liberty. As a nation we have been truly blessed. During the course of our brief existence as a nation, we have enjoyed a level of ingenuity and prosperity seldom known in the history of the world. Freed from the bondage of tyranny and oppression, early settlers of this land wasted little time figuring out better, more effective ways to live more comfortably, to accomplish tasks, to travel, to farm, to communicate, to do virtually anything. Considering our present level of technology, who knows what the future may hold for us. But please remember that none of this would have been possible without our greatest cultural contribution of all – the Constitution of the United States of America!

Our leaders, one by one, have taken oaths to faithfully execute the duties of their respective offices. They have sworn to “preserve, protect and defend” the Constitution from all enemies, both foreign and domestic. One by one we have watched them forfeit these oaths. Our own President speaks ill of us on both foreign and domestic soil and tramples our Constitution under his feet, doing things worthy of impeachment.

My fellow citizens, we now stand accused before the world – accused of having too much ingenuity, too much prosperity, too many of the blessings of liberty even though we have generously shared of our wealth time and again with all who stand in need. We have importuned before our judges for a redress of our grievances, we have importuned before our governors, we have importuned before our congressional leadership and even our presidents to no avail. They refuse to hear us. Now it is time to importune before the throne of the Almighty. It is time to allow Him to purge the stains of corruption from our leadership, our land, and our banner. It is time to see the glory to which our nation shall rise when she is no longer burdened by evil and conspiring promoters of personal agendas!

Will you join me in this day of fasting and prayer? If you would like to do so, please make note of the date Sunday, the 2nd of August 2009 as the date of this special event. Let us unite our voices in a common cause to our Heavenly Father, that the agency with which He blessed us may stand forever, unthwarted by the acts of men.

Moreover, let us undertake to do as Abraham Lincoln suggested in his speech at Gettysburg: “It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us – that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to the cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion – that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain – that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom – and that government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the earth!"

Our Standard of Liberty

     This being the time of year we traditionally celebrate our freedom and our flag, our thoughts are commonly turned to a united feeling of pride in our country and all that we enjoy.

     But in speaking with one young man about the flag, I asked him if he knew what it meant or stood for.  It was a sad thing to learn from his own lips that he didn't know.

     It would be an easy thing to cast an accusing stone at his ignorance, but before anyone does such a thing, first take this little quiz:

     1)  What do the thirteen stripes stand for?  (This should be an easy question.)

     2)  What do the stars stand for and why are they white?

     3)  What do the colors red, white and blue represent?

     4)  Why is our banner called a "standard" of liberty?

     Most people of our nation can tell that the stripes of our flag represent the original thirteen colonies and the stars represent the 50 states of our great Union, but little else can they reveal about the "standard" they claim to pledge allegiance to.

     Before revealing the meaning of our standard, it might be appropriate to define what a standard is.  We use the word "standard" in reference to many things.  For example:  We often refer to a ruler as being a "standard" of measurement.  Most automobile makers claim their cars are a "standard" of excellence.  We use gold as a "standard" for our currency.  So, what does the word "standard" mean?

     The word "standard" can have more than one meaning, but we'll deal with only two for the moment.  First - a standard is something we can measure all other things of like kind by.  For example:  Gold is a standard among all other metals because it's enduring qualities far surpass all other metals.  Gold does not canker, rust or decay, so as a "standard" of currency, it becomes a wise choice and a stable one as well.

     The second definition of a "standard" is that of a creed or, in other words, a set of principles we live by - such as the teachings of Christ are the "standard" of Christianity.

     Years ago when warring nations or peoples went to battle, they carried a flag or "standard" with them.  On the flag was drawn or painted a symbolic representation of the cause for which each side fought.  The cause was their "standard".  It was a representation of how they measured life and the creed by which they sought to live.

     The person chosen to carry the banner into battle was called the "Standard Bearer".  It was a great honour to be called to such duty, for it was the duty of the "standard bearer" to keep the flag flying throughout the course of the battle.  This was done so that during the battle, soldiers could look upon the flag as a reminder of the cause for which they fought.  It helped to strengthen the resolve and motivation of the soldiers (hopefully on to victory).

     But the honours of "standard bearer" were not without risk, for at every turn he became the object of heated aggression.  It was the earnest desire of the enemy to cause ones standard to fall.  In felling the flag, the enemy strove to show ones cause or creed was unfruitful - not strong enough to stand against attack or brutal force.  In their eyes, it was not just a flag which fell - not just a mere piece of cloth, but the cause, creed and standard of the people which had proven itself unworthy.  (This is where flag etiquette originated and why we never let our flag touch the ground.)

     So, what does our banner represent?  The meaning goes much deeper than colonies and 50 states.  After all, we are 50 states all united under one government of our own free will and choice!

     And the colors?  The red of our flag represents courage - the courage to do what is right and just.  It also reminds us of how our freedom was ransomed - by the shedding of blood.

     Blue symbolizes integrity - not only in our dealings with each other, but with all people everywhere.  It also reminds us to stand boldly on the side of truth and to be loyal to our people and the cause of freedom.

     White is for "One nation under God".  It also stands hand-in-hand with the other colors of our banner in reminding us that our motives in all things must be pure and self-sacrificing.

     Stars were chosen to represent our 50 states, the lands of our inheritance, and the Constitution by which we are governed unitedly - in hopes that they may shine forth forever bright as an ensign to the world.  These stars are white to signify purity and that our brightness of hope rests with God.

     The early uniforms of our military, being chiefly blue or white, were also reminders to the wearer of why and how we serve - with  courage, integrity and principle.

     While many nations strive for peace, it should be observed that our Founders strove diligently to erect a tribute to it's source.  Even if one does not believe in God, it must be acknowledged that the virtues of loyalty, integrity and unmitigated service to others make a noble bastion against the swelling tides of uncertainty in this war-torn world.

     All the early patriotic songs of our country make reference to these noble attributes.  One of my favorites, The Star Spangled Banner, is, to me, appropriately called our National Anthem.  Anthems are hymns of praise to God and the song acknowledges that it is by his very hand our freedom endures.

     Like all good songs, there's unually a story or experience which inspires it.  The same is true of our National Anthem.  The Star Spangled Banner was a poem written by Francis Scott Key during the War of 1812 when Key was taken prisoner on board a British Man-O-War.  He'd come on board to negotiate terms for the release of a prisoner, having been granted permission by President Jefferson to do so.  While the Admiral of the fleet thought Mr. Key's proposals admirable, negotiation was not the intention of the British, and they immediately set sail for Fort McHenry.

     The seige lasted all night.  Francis Scott Key recorded what he could see of the battle through a port hole of the ship - "the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air", but more than anything else he cared to know whether or not the standard of his beloved America was still flying.

     The morning came at length.  It was the Admiral himself who came to release Mr. Key from his cell and, without explanation, told him he was free to go.  Thrilled at the prospect of being released alive, Mr. Key didn't stop to ask questions.  He was conveyed to shore in a dinghy, then made great haste towards Fort McHenry in order to congratulate the American soldiers on their victory.

     The scene which greeted his eyes upon entering that fort was one of death and ruin.  A sombre air hung over the remains, and as he looked beyond the men who were striving to recollect themselves, he saw, to his amazement, the reason the American standard was still flying.  Even though the British admitted defeat, it was not without price on the part of the Americans.

     During the course of the battle, the British had succeeded many times in leveling our flag by repeated sprays of cannon fire.  And each time the standard fell one or another of those brave American soldiers left all security behind to run out and hoist it again.  The flag was still aloft by reason of being planted firmly in a mound of dead men - men who knew what the fight was all about; men who knew why they were there and why they were willing to die - so that their cause, their creed, their "STANDARD" might live on.  To quote the words of one defender of liberty:  "In memory of our God, our religion and freedom, and our peace, and our wives, and our children."

     When we gaze upon that flag this 4th of July, let us reflect upon what it truly means.  As we gaze into the night sky to watch "the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air", may our hearts be turned with increased commitment toward the safety and preservation of all she represents.  Let us remember our own Pledge of Allegiance to this great Standard of Liberty with better understanding of what we've pledged ourselves to, henceforth to live better and more worthy of her hand.

Good Morning Everyone!

     It's that time of day again and we're rolling out of bed once more.  It promises to be another lovely day and we're looking forward to it.

     We had a chance to update our page last night.  We added some color, a link, and a couple of YouTube videos.  It's been fun to tinker a bit.  I love painting so adding a splash of color here and there provided a nice touch.  It's actually hard to choose from the selection provided - they have so many nice colors that could be used!

     Bear and Max are enjoying the morning.  They love to romp and run about.  We've been taking them both down to the dock for the past few days.  Bear loves it down there.  Max hasn't made up his mind yet.  Since he hasn't come up with the courage to venture out on to it on his own, we carried him out to the end of the pier and set him down just to see what he'd do.  The pier floats.  Perhaps that's what causes him to be so uncertain.  He managed to sit there patiently for a few minutes while we pet him and offered reassurance.  Then we walked slowly back to the steps.  He followed quite cautiously and headed quickly up the stairs.  Little by little he's getting braver.  We notice now that he is, at least, willing to come down the steps on his own.  He's still not willing to go any further without additional encouragement, but we suppose in time he'll come to love it as much as Bear does.

     It's been fun anticipating this year's summer vacation visits from all the family members.  One brother and his family should arrive this weekend.  They'll be staying for a couple of weeks.  Another brother and his family won't be coming 'til the next weekend.  We're most happy to be able to see everyone and plan to take lots of pictures!  The kids are growing so fast!  We need to capture these moments now.  If we delay, nature will take her course in spite of any good intentions we may have, and they'll be grown and gone before we know it.

     We've spent a number of very constructive days in the garden this week.  The Spring rains have been so abundant causing everything to grow much faster than it normally would.  It's been quite something trying to keep up with all the weed pulling and shrub trimming.  Since my husband is from Idaho, he's absolutely amazed to see how much rain we can tolerate in this area and still not experience flooding.  I keep reminding him that Heavenly Father knows what he's doing.  It takes a lot of rain to support all the vegetation.  Even what we're getting now seems to either run off or be absorbed within just a few days leaving fields and side roads dusty all over again.

     Well, it's time to get the dogs out for their morning walk.  It's a quiet and peaceful time that we all enjoy.  Nature is always entertaining us with her sights.  The deer have been especially obliging and are so graceful to watch.
