A nerd of ginormous proportions
Posted On 02/28/2009 09:11:09

I just started a new book this week for my ward's book group.  It's the book that I chose, and I've been waiting for months to get around to reading it.  Toward the end of last summer, a friend of mine did a review of it on her blog, and it sounded interesting and even amusing to me (it wasn't the first time I'd heard of it).  So I signed up for March's book group, and indicated that this would be the book I chose.  Then, not knowing any of this, my sister bought me the book for Christmas.  I've been chomping at the bit to get around to it.  I really must be a nerd of ginormous proportions, because I'm just so excited to read it.  I've only made it through the foreword and the preface so far, but I love it!  The book:

Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation, by Lynne Truss.

Yeah, I've got issues.

Funnies for you!

My mom sent me an email today with all of these in it.  Hope you enjoy!

Irked
Posted On 11/23/2008 15:21:38
Irked is what I was after Sacrament meeting today.  We had three good talks.  Honestly, I don't remember what the youth speaker spoke about, but I do remember that I felt the Spirit.  I think it was about unity.  The second speaker spoke about self-worth, I think.  Again, I know I felt the Spirit.  then we had an interlude hymn, and the final speaker spoke about reverence.  I missed the first half of it because I had to change my baby's diaper, but when I came back in the chapel, I noticed how quiet it was.  At first I thought it was because the brother who was speaking was so quiet, so everyone else had to be quiet in order to hear him.  Then I started listening and I realized what his theme was.  It was a really good talk, but it apparently didn't sink in with everyone.  The kids in the congregation got it...they were quiet and still during the meeting.  However, there were three men I walked past on my way to the back of the chapel afterward, who were (loudly) talking about yesterday's BYU-Utah football game, and how "if we had put up the right offense, blah blah blah."  I was really irked.  I almost went up to them and said "I don't mean to be rude, but did you not hear Brother Rogers' talk just now?"  Admittedly, I already don't particularly like two of these three brethren anyway, but I was very saddened to see that it was a case of garbage-in-garbage-out with them.

(And I'm posting this here because the wives of two of them read my personal blog, so I can't post it there...lol.)

Unusual Fast & Testimony Meeting
Posted On 11/02/2008 23:27:17
Today at church, the counselor in the Bishopric that was conducting bore his testimony, then before turning the time over to the congregation, he re-read the standard political letter from the First Presidency and reminded us that "if any of you are planning on making political speeches, this is not the place."  There was a little snickering throughout the chapel, but then he sat down.  Two of the first five people to get up talked about Prop 8, which annoyed me a little bit.  For one thing, I live in Ohio.  For another, I split politically with (I think it's safe to say) the majority of the Church.  However, hearing people talk about this issue in Sacrament meeting where the Spirit was already present was a lot different, I found, than reading about it here, where things tend to get heated in debate.

Mostly, I'm just excited for Tuesday, and then for Wednesday when it's all over.  :)

Did anyone else have "odd" meetings today?

Family feud
Posted On 10/09/2008 09:38:13
I keep a private blog.  I actually have a few.  But I'm not writing about this there because a lot of people who read it would get offended, and my family (not husband, but parents, siblings, and grandparents) would be upset.  But I really need to vent, and I do it more constructively in writing.

Yesterday, the Church had a special broadcast for members in (or from) California, regarding the infamous Proposition 8.  My sister watched the broadcast.  She felt so "inspired" (her word), and posted on her blog about it, with some brief thoughts, a video clip, and a link to a website about Prop 8 preserving marriage.

I left her a comment on that blog post saying that I knew I was opening up a can of worms, but that I just don't see any legal justification for restricting same-sex marriage.  Morally I disagree with it, and would vote against it, given the opportunity in my own state.  I also indicated that while I don't agree with same-sex marriage, I do think that it's important that same-sex couples enjoy legal benefits (insurance, etc.), but I just don't think that there is any legal basis for restriction (see more of my thoughts here).

A few minutes later, I got an email from my sister that said simply, "please don't leave another comment on my blog about it. thanks."  So I went to her blog to see why she would say that, and she had deleted my comment!!!!!!!!

It was 12:30 this morning (I should have been in bed) and I was fuming.  I was livid.  It's not like I was some anonymous commenter that disagreed with her, so she didn't want me on her page.  I'm her SISTER!  And she just deleted my comment because she didn't like it!  I suppose she's entitled, since it is her blog, after all, but that just seems like one of those "blog etiquette" things to me.  You don't just delete people's comments when you don't like them.

I think I'm done venting.

As I mulled this over in my head tonight, I decided that I can't decide if I want California Proposition 8 to pass or not.  If it passes, my morals will be satisfied.  If it doesn't, my opinions and ethics will be satisfied.  I don't want to be part of the Christian Right who celebrates when it passes because we've now imposed our religion(s) on the rest of the country, but I don't know that I want it to fail either.
