How Would You Celebrate?
Posted On: 05/03/2008 23:28:30

In less than a month, my family will be halfway through the Old Testament!  I'm thinking we should celebrate in some way.  What do you think would be fitting for an "I'm halfway through the Old Testament" party?  We're very excited about this.  We're also finishing The Book of Mormon for the third time as a family tomorrow night.  Woo hoo!!!!!

We are so determined to read the entire Bible together.  Right now we are in 1st Chronicles, which is somewhat painful with all the "who was the son of ______" with many names we make up our ownpronunciations for because we have no idea what the heck we're doing.    I'm thinking the NT will be a breeze compared to this.  I'm kind of nervous about our baby throwing us off after he/she is born, but hopefully we'll keep on schedule.

Thank you!  Those are great ideas.  Aurora, my kids are 8, 5, and 4 - all boys.  Now I have ideas for BOM and OT celebrations!    I'm thinking I should invite my friend for the lamb.  That's her favorite.

Celebrate by having a Passover meal: roast lamb, a salad of endive, romaine and the like for bitter herbs, and un-leavened bread, perhaps pita.  (See Exodus 12.)  As it says, "A lamb for an house". . . this is a family meal.  Teach your children that this meal was to prepare them for the coming of the Messiah, the "Lamb of God."  (Roast with fire symbolizes His agony in Gethsemane, and no bones broken symbolizes the fact that He died without any bones being broken.)  Maybe even invite a Jewish family over to show you some of the finer points!  Have fun!

Hmm, i would do a layer cake to represent the many facets of the book of mormon, with maybe a few different kinds of cake in it.  I would also do a scripture chase game, a dress up like your favorite book of mormon character contest and see how many people can guess which one you are.  Hand each person a peice of paper, and without anyone telling they have to write the name of the person and who they think that person is representing.  The one that has the most right wins.  I would probably do ice cream with the cake.  I would decorate the room a bit with things that remind me of old testament times.  Maybe do a scavenger hunt with clues around the house that are scripture based.  In other words, write down  scriptures and use certain words from them to direct them to where the next clue is hidden.  Count the number of words to the word you want, then write down that number to that word in the scripture.   You can have all kinds of fun making them search to find just what the words are in each clue.  Another good one is to have them create their own nephite headband.  Take strips of plain durable cloth (levi material works best, or even some kind of white thicker fabric) at the fabric store, go and get some cloth paints at the store, and then when you go to make them, just use enough fabric in the strip to be able to tie it and leave a little bit hanging, about three inches width but you can adjust by the size of the person.  You can also help with a bit of hot glue to stick some feathers onto it, but that depends on if you want to use a low temp glue gun or not depending on the age of the participants.  if you do that use a wider strip of cloth and fold it over onto the feathers on both sides putting the glue inside the cloth and around the feather end top and bottom. If you have someone who knows how to sew, it can be sewn on as well, along with buttons, beads and sequins.  (if you did not guess, I am a nutty crafter, lol)  These are just some ideas, but I hope it helps.  If you need some more ideas, ask me and I will drag out my craft and idea books for kids and we can brainstorm a bit more.  I just need to know rough ages so you can gear it to the age group.
