A Proposal
Posted On: 05/06/2008 18:05:07

I mentioned on the board a friend of mine who is dying of cancer.  To add insult to injury, their roof leaked the other day and they need a new one.  Friends are aleady planning a fundraiser for next month because of their enormous medical bills and the latest news is so upsetting.

So, I was thinking, since they have this great place lined up for the fundraiser, I am going to approach some roofers asking for a free roof for them in exchange for great advertising - a table at the fundraiser and mention from the MC.  I hope someone will do this for them. If anyone there is shopping for roofs in the near future, the company will certainly make an impact on them if the did this, and they can display before and after pictures.  :) My husband is in construction and is going to ask his boss if he will donate this.  If not, he knows some other roofers he can ask.

Please pray for them that they will get the roof they need and the money for the medical care.  It's only going to get worse.  Deborah was already hospitalized for over a week in severe pain.

Thank you!

Thank you for the suggestions!  My husband's boss says they have some leftover material from a job they did and hopefully it's enough.  He's going to go measure the roof and see, plus he needs to find out the color, how long it's supposed to last for, etc.  :)

If you can't get a free roof -- this is something our ward has done.  However, the owner of the roofing company is also a member of our ward!  So that may have some bearing on it . . .

The elders quorum gets together and has a volunteer work afternoon/evening the day before the new roof goes on.  They take off the old shingles and get it ready for the new paper and shingles.  The ladies do a picnic or cookout.  They put a good tarp cover (provided by the roofing company) on the roof for overnight, and in the morning the roofer comes and puts on the new roof.

The roofing company then slices a big chunk off the price of the new roof, because the first half of the work is already done when they get there.

(The roofing company supplies the shingle "shovels" and also hauls away the debris.)
