night at grandmas
Posted On 05/01/2008 22:30:07

When I was a young girl, I used to get to spend the night with my grandmama. Spending the night with my grandma was quite a treat.

My grandma lived across the field.  It was a looong loooong way. I would never walk that path at night. There were real live coyotes who were waiting just for me.  The path was well worn, no weeds or chico bushes or anything.  If it started to get too dark grandma would get out her flashlight and shine it down the path to lead my way.

I never had to pack a nightgown to go to grandmas house. My grandma had the most wonderful nightgowns with matching robes. She knew just how to use a rubberband to make it fit.

Dinner was whatever we wanted. I don't remember much about dinner but I know what dessert was. She always kept several Hershey bars hiding in the back of her fridge.

We would sit and watch Lawrence Welk and eat candy bars.  And ah one and ah two....... My grandma was not one to just sit still and listen. She was an active participant. She would dance the polka all alone in the living room.

She would twist and twirl around her living room floor wearing her bright, bold, house coat. Everything she wore was bright and bold.

Before bed grandma would make us a cup of hot Jello. Mmmm hot water with some Jello mixed in.

Tonight I am spending the night with my grandma-ma one last time.  Lawrence Welk isn't playing on the tv.  I have a Hershey bar but I can't eat it.

The only sound in the room is the oxygen, and an occasional nurse outside at the nurses station.

Several days ago this wonderful woman called her family around her and asked them not to be mad at her (that is just who she is) but she was tired. She was tired. She wanted to go home.

So my Grandma-ma........

Good night, sleep tight and pleasant dreams to you
Here's a wish and prayer that every dream comes true
And though it's always sweet sorrow to part
I know you'll always remain in my heart

Good night, sleep tight and pleasant dreams to you
Here's a wish and a prayer that every dream comes true
And now 'til we meet again

Adios, au revior, auf weidersehen.....Good Night!
