MATURING

As I stood searching
in the mirror nervously
looking at my graying hair
fleshy jowls
bushy eyebrows
moles or beauty marks
and a two-day-old beard
I noticed the man
in the face watchfully
gazing back
almost startlingly
powerful
as I thought my father
once to be
with a hint of a smile
assuring himself in me
