In The Same Boat Or Plane
By Reid Baer

I’m up at cruising altitude
32,000 feet and I
set my 757
jumbo jet on autopilot

So I can roam around the air-
craft watching what the others are
doing at their stations to learn
from each compartment what’s keeping

Us aloft and how we’re able
to fly together as a whole -
holding on to each other’s fate.
Often I have written these things

After sleeping late, lingering
at a cloudy gate, and setting
down words from the authority
alone of my own dream like state.
